What is First Aid?
First Aid is the first treatment given to a casualty with the objective of preserving life
and preventing his condition from becoming worse until proper medical treatment is
given.
Contents of a First Aid Kit
Every home should have a First Aid kit, which usually contains the following items.
You may want to include other first aid items that serve your household's needs.
• Equipment
§ Disposable gloves to protect the rescuer from infection transmitted via
blood and other bodily fluids
§ Tweezers to pull out stings and other small foreign objects embedded in
the skin/wounds
§ Scissors to cut dressing, bandages and clothes
§ Resuscitation face shield to serve as a protective layer during CPR
§ Thermometer to measure human body temperature
• Dressings
§ First aid dressing to cover wounds
§ Sterile eye dressing to cover eye injuries
§ Adhesive plasters to cover superficial wounds
§ Sterile gauze pad to clean or cover wounds
• Bandages
§ Triangular bandages to use in immobilisation of fractures and as a
secondary dressing
§ Crepe bandages to use as a secondary dressing
§ Adhesive tape to tape the ends of bandages
